THOUGHTS ON FRESHGRADE

1/3/2021

I should preface this article by saying that this review on FreshGrade Classic is written from a parent’s perspective, and that I have never used it as an educator and therefore cannot comment on what is possible using the teacher settings. While I can appreciate FreshGrade’s intent of offering a window into the classroom and how it can help to report on student progress in schools moving away from traditional grading systems, in my opinion as a parent, it is not without its flaws and limitations. Let’s begin by looking at the pros.

Pros

  • Real-Time Progress Updates: FreshGrade Classic allows for real-time updates on student progress.
  • Evidence of Learning: Teachers can upload photos and videos as evidence of learning.
  • Student Portal: Learners can post their own work and comments using their accounts.
  • Parent Portal: Parents can comment on their child’s account.
  • Remote Learning: When schools switched to remote learning due to the pandemic, FreshGrade provided an easy means for parents to upload evidence of learning from home.

Cons

  • Report Cards: This may not be an issue at all schools, but at my daughter’s school a formal report card is sent home with very few comments written on it and instructions to view FreshGrade for more details. When transferring schools, this becomes a real issue as the new school cannot legally check the parent account on Fresh Grade to evaluate these comments.
  • Comments Are Only Listed by Date:  When logging into FreshGrade as a parent, comments appear in order from newest to oldest; it doesn’t allow you to select criteria for viewing so you can see your child’s progress across a specific subject area.
  • Tracking Year to Year Progress: Though you can go back and see your child’s progress from previous years in their portfolios, you cannot compare their progress from year to year. To do this, you would need to scroll through all prior comments to find what you are looking for, take a snapshot or jot notes and then open up another year’s worth of comments and do the same.
  • Separating Grades from Progress: As a parent, when scrolling through the comments it’s confusing to know which is an actual grade and what is merely an update on progress as they are all lumped within the same feed. And yes, there are color-coded circles indicating a grade; however, FreshGrade could do a better job in separating the two – grade vs. progress report.
When weighing all the pros and cons, FreshGrade is a great tool for commenting on progress and for teachers to share what students have been up to in class – from cool projects to presentations, etc. The student and parent portals are also a fantastic way for learners to share their work and for parents to comment on their progress. Where it falls short, and again it could just be at my daughter’s school as they are not using FreshGrade to generate and print report cards, is the lack of concrete documentation provided to parents at the end of the year and parents’ not being able to manipulate the comment feeds by subject area, by year, by progress vs. grade, etc.
Thoughts on FreshGrade
Is your school using FreshGrade as a means of reporting? Are there any other comments you would like to add? We’d love to hear them!
