When searching for the right materials for beginning reader ELL students, it can be a challenging to find ones that are scaffolded in their progression so that learners can build a solid foundation before moving on to the next skill. This is why our series of Emergent and Transitional eBooks and learning videos move at a slow pace and build from one to two to three- and four-word phrases, etc. While our previous collection of videos read by Timmy Ridday focused on introducing students to single CVC words, this next set of videos builds on that knowledge and combines CVC words with sight words. And in keeping with a similar format, these new videos also follow a repetitive pattern, allowing students to hear the phrases/sentences at a normal pace, at a slower pace, and finally presented without audio so that students may practice reading on their own. Below is a breakdown of what the series includes, alongside sample videos that you can try out!
1. CVC & Sight Word Videos
These reading videos focus on the following sight words: a, am, and, can, he, I, is, it, my, one, see, she, the, we. Each video serves to reinforce one or two CVC words paired with a newly introduced sight word.
2. CVC & Sight Words Videos
After students have practiced reading phrases that include a single newly introduced sight word, the next set of learning videos introduce learners to 3-word phrases that include a mix of CVC and sight words.
Once ELL students are comfortable with two and three word-phrases, they are encouraged to continue their learning journey and move on to reading 3 and 4-word sentences using this subsequent set of reading videos.
4. Mixed Sentences
And finally, in this last set of reading videos, ELL students are encouraged to challenge themselves in reading sentence patterns previously learned mixed together – i.e. I am _____. I can _____.
The CVC & Sight Words videos are now available and are suitable for both classroom and at-home use. Explore our purchasing options to learn more and stay tuned as we continue to expand our collection of reading videos.
In addition to our eBooks and reading videos, we also offer reading assessment forms that can be used to evaluate your ELL students’ reading skills. See Early Reading Assessment Tools to learn more about their benefits and how they can help you track your students’ progress.
At Education by Shala Books, we are always looking for ways to enhance our existing resources. So when Timmy Riday, an English teacher in China, proposed the creation of reading videos to accompany our existing sets of Emergent and Transitional Readers eBooks, it was an idea we jumped on as we could see the value in them for learners. Do you have an idea that you feel would benefit ELL students? If so, feel free to contact us – we are always open to hearing great ideas and adding them to our site!
